Architectural Review Board

Mission Statement

The duty of the Architectural Review Board is to protect Frankfort’s historic neighborhoods by preserving desirable and unique features, archaeological sites, preventing blight and intrusions of undesirable design characteristics caused by insensitive development, and by protecting and stabilizing property values.

The city created the ARB in 1983, through a Certified Local Government agreement with the state, to review development proposals and provide design controls for designated historic neighborhoods. It also considers requests for conditional use permits, dimensional variances, and appeals for administrative decisions for properties located in Frankfort’s three historic districts. Its work is guided by Articles 4, 16, 17, 18 and 19 of the City's Zoning Regulations and its supplemental design guidelines.

The ARB is tasked to expand the community knowledge of the historic background of Frankfort through the ongoing survey and inventory of historic sites within the City that may receive recognition as local landmarks, historic districts, or be nominated to the National Register of Historic Places.

ABOUT

The ARB hears cases within the SC, SH, or CB historic zoning districts relating to exterior modifications to properties, new construction, additions, demolitions, and acts as the Board of Zoning Adjustment for variances and conditional use permits, and reviews local/national register designation requests.
